eSIM vs Physical SIM

By Joe Longman | Posted November 11, 2025

The difference between an eSIM and a physical SIM is quite simple – one is built into the handset and the other you need to insert manually.

Providers typically offer both variations and it’s down to you to choose which you should go with. Let us outline the differences between the two for you.

The difference between an eSIM and a physical SIM

To you, there might not be much difference when using your phone but there are a few key differences that’s worth knowing.

eSIM

The hardware which is used for the capability of using an eSIM is already installed into the device itself. Sometimes it’s in addition to the physical SIM try and sometimes it’s the only option. More recently, mobile manufacturers are exclusively featuring eSIM only handsets, such as the iPhone Air, so it’s worth knowing what the mobile has before purchasing your next data plan, just in case. If you’re getting the handset and SIM as a package deal, they’ll work together without issues.

Physical SIM

A physical SIM has been the standard for years. Since 1991 to be exact, released by a German smart-card maker named Giesecke and Devrient (good knowledge for your next pub quiz).

It’s a small piece of card which seems harmless but it’s actually a very intelligent piece of kit. It features your unique information, such as your mobile number, and sends signals to your provider, allowing you to connect to the internet, make phone calls and send text messages.

The pros and cons

Your requirements will likely be the deciding factor when choosing either an eSIM or a physical SIM. Let’s check out the pros and cons.

Feature  eSIM  Physical SIM
How to start  Scan a QR code supplied by your chosen provider.  Insert your SIM into the built-in SIM tray.
Changing networks  You’ll be sent a new eSIM from your new provider.  You’ll need to wait for a new physical SIM to be delivered.
Works on which phones  All new phones as standard.  Most new phones. Some new phones only have eSIM capabilities.
Security  Harder to steal as it’s a virtual setup.  Easier to be stolen and lost.
Switching hardware  It would need to be setup again.  Easily move the physical SIM to your new phone.
